Clean rooftop solar panels - Higher Power Solar maintenance

One of the best things about rooftop solar is how little it asks of you. Solar panels have no moving parts, and a well-installed system runs for 25+ years with minimal upkeep. Still, a little maintenance keeps production at its peak – here’s what solar panel maintenance actually involves, when cleaning helps, and what Higher Power Solar covers.

Do solar panels need maintenance?

Very little. There are no moving parts to wear out, and modern panels are sealed under tempered glass. The maintenance of solar panels comes down to three things: keeping them reasonably clean, watching production so you catch a fault early, and an occasional professional inspection of the mounting and electrical connections. That’s it for most homes.

Solar panel cleaning: when it’s worth it

In rainy climates, rain does most of the cleaning for you. Cleaning helps most when panels are coated in pollen, salt spray (coastal homes), bird droppings, or ash after a dry stretch or wildfire season. A dirty array can lose 5-15% of its output. For most homes, a gentle rinse once or twice a year is plenty – never use harsh chemicals or abrasive tools that can scratch the glass or void the warranty. On steep or high roofs, leave it to a professional rather than risk a fall.

Monitoring catches problems before they cost you

The single most valuable maintenance habit is watching your production app (Enphase, Tesla, SolarEdge). A panel or microinverter that drops offline shows up as a dip in output long before you’d notice it on your bill. Set a monthly reminder to glance at the app – if production looks off, that’s when to call your installer.

What a professional inspection covers

An inspection every few years – or after a major storm – is usually all a residential system needs.

What Higher Power Solar covers

Every system we install carries a workmanship warranty, and the panels and inverters carry their own manufacturer warranties (typically 25 years on panels, 10-25 on inverters and batteries). If something we installed fails – a cracked panel, a faulty microinverter, a mounting issue – that’s on us to fix. We also offer post-storm inspections for homes in hurricane and salt-air areas. See our solar installation guide for how the system is built to last.

Frequently asked questions

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

For most homes, once or twice a year – more in dusty, coastal, or high-pollen areas, less where rain is frequent. Monitor production; a noticeable drop that a rinse fixes tells you it was time.

Is solar panel maintenance expensive?

No. Most maintenance is free (monitoring and rain). Professional cleaning or an inspection is a modest periodic cost, and warranty-covered repairs on a properly installed system cost you nothing.

Will cleaning my own panels void the warranty?

Gentle rinsing with water won’t. Abrasive tools, pressure washers, or harsh chemicals can scratch the glass or damage seals and may void coverage. When in doubt, have it done professionally.

Do solar panels need maintenance after a hurricane?

A post-storm inspection is smart in Florida and other storm-prone areas – to confirm the mounting, seals, and connections are intact even if the panels look fine. We offer these inspections for the systems we install.
