Terms that come up on a Venice roof
- Relay
- Lifting and stacking existing tile, renewing the membrane underneath, then re-laying the same tile. Common here and much cheaper than new tile.
- Counter-flashing
- The upper metal lapping over a base flashing at a wall or parapet. Missing it is a leading cause of leaks on older island buildings.
- Detail
- Any place the roof stops being a plain surface — a valley, wall, parapet or penetration. Most roofs fail at a detail rather than in the open field.

Common questions from Venice homeowners
Do you work on the older homes on the island?
Regularly. Island roofs tend to be tile or low-slope, often with parapets and additions, and they need a different approach from a straightforward subdivision re-roof.
My roof is only twelve years old and already leaking. Is that normal?
It is more common than it should be. On newer tile roofs the usual culprit is the underlayment or the original workmanship rather than the tile, and it is worth establishing which before you pay for anything.
Can you match clay barrel tile?
Often yes, and where an exact match is not available we can usually relay the existing tile over new underlayment so the roof keeps its original appearance.
How do I know whether I need a repair or a replacement?
We inspect, photograph and tell you which. If the deck and underlayment have life left, we will say so rather than quote a replacement you do not need.
